28 Sep Postcard From New York (+ a few notes about the future)

Long time, no see… Never thought It’d take more than five weeks until I updated the blog again but there’s been so many changes in my life these last couple of months and I haven’t had the time to even think about the blog. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I’v moved to Lund to study architecture for 5 years. So I’m just in the beginning of getting to know a new city, a new home, a new kitchen, new friends and so many other things. The first weeks in Lund have been really intense with a lot of initiation activities and parties but I’m trying to bake whenever I’ve got time because it’s the only thing that is normal in my life at the moment. But I thrive as a fish in the water, I’m already in love with Lund and can’t wait to discover all the parks, bakeries, libraries and more.

Just before I moved to Lund I went to New York for 4 days to visit my sister who studied there during the summer. We had the best time, ate so much good food and enjoyed the NY atmosphere. Down below follows a short weekend NYC guide with things to do and places to eat. Hope you’ll enjoy it!

What to eat

The Double Windsor

I might not be a burger fanatic but I’ve tried quite a few burgers in my life and I must say that the burger I had at The Double Windsor was the best burger I’ve ever eaten. It was served with crispy thin fries and the juiciest steak you can imagine. My sister couldn’t agree less. The Double Windsor is located next to Prospect park in Brooklyn and have a cozy atmosphere and good prices.

Momofuko Milk Bar

Most people probably already know about Momofuko Milk bar, the sister bakery to the Momofuko restaurants but I still think it’s worth mentioning. I took the pork bun with ice tea and for dessert the cornflake-marshmallow-chocolate-chip cookie. It was soft and super chewy which is just how I like it!

Bluestone Lane Collective Café

A super cute brunch place in West Village with a lot of GF options on their menu. My sister ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes and I had the banana bread, which was one of the best banana breads I’ve ever had!

Cafe Viand

This place is perfect if you’re looking for a classic american diner. They serve a lot of breakfast and lunch specials like waffles(with a multigrain option), eggs Benedict and burgers. Lovely cozy atmosphere and great prices.

Chelsea Market

A food Court next to The High Line. They have everything from freshly made doughnuts to vegan sushi. A tip is to buy some food there and bring to The High Line and enjoy the view while eating.

Dean & Deluca

Dean & Deluca is a very beautiful but expensive grocery store. It’s worth visiting one of their stores without buying anything just because they have so many wonderful things. I bought 3 bars of Mast Brothers Chocolate and when I came home to Sweden I stored them in a sealed plastic bag in my luggage on my bedroom floor. My dog found them, tore up the bag and ate them all… So yeah that was 33$ wasted.

Babbo

Babbo is an italian restaurant located in Soho run by Mario Batali. Their pasta is to die for and I still think about that Rosemary and Olive Oil cake with vanilla ice cream we had for dessert. Note to self: Make a rosemary and olive oil cake. Now.

What to do

China: Through the Looking Glass (The MET)

This exhibition at the MET has actually closed now but it was too good not to share here. Anyone who’s interested in fashion, art or history would have loved it. The exhibition was about how the west world portrays China through fashion. Designers like Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Dolce Gabbana were represented. Probably the best exhibition I’ve been to.

Les Miserables (Broadway)

You can’t visit New York without seeing a musical at Broadway. I’ve wanted to see the musical live ever since the movie came. It was amazing and you will not be disappointed.

American Museum of Natural History

Museums of natural history are my favorite kind of museums, probably because they’re always located in beautiful, big old buildings. The museum of natural history in New York is not an exception. Also, make sure to see an IMAX film when you’re there.

The High Line

The high line on west side is a park 30 feet above street level on an old rail line. It’s so beautiful by night and I just couldn’t stop taking pictures and looking at the view.

Beautiful postcards! New York is really magical, isn’t it?
And what a coincidence, I’ve just posted my favorite bakeries with sourdough bread 🙂 Thank you for this guide, definitely saving it for my next visit.

Hope you have great time in new city and your studies go well!

Snyggt Thea!

Awesome wrap-up, Thea! I so want to go. I can’t believe your dog ate your mast brothers chocolate, that is just tragic 🙁 can’t stay mad at the dog though… missing your posts! x
